In the 1840’s Joe Tipton Jobe and his wife Emma lived at the heart of a sprawling 337 acre East Tennessee farm that

is now the centre of downtown Johnson City.  It was Tipton Jobe who first imagined a vibrant city center and gave the

land to make it happen. He created a patchwork of shop-lined streets and thoroughfares connecting business,

institutions and neighborhoods.  And when he was gone, a new century of entrepreneurs and citizens carried the

dream into the 20th century with an opera house, new town square, a lodging house, mercantile and dry goods

stores.  After decades of quiet, the dream for a vibrant Tipton neighborhood has been reborn.

A premier urban revitalization project, Tipton Street is an exciting downtown destination for living, shopping, dining

and working that is unique to the Tri-Cities area where the original historic buildings on Tipton Street are being

revived with the care and attention to detail that makes the best of what's authentic, while adding modern

convenience.  Where history lines the halls of the old Hannah building, Tipton Street features 31 residential lofts with

restaurants and retail shopes recreated for residents who want to live, work and play in a vibrant downtown

neighborhood that's an easy walk to shops, churches and cultural events.
